The first time I realised I wanted to learn BSL was in my first job aged 16. I worked in a cafe at White Post Farm which was a working farm, but set up for visitors close to my home town. It was a haven for school trips, one of the schools that visited was specifically for D/deaf children. As the children came to order their ice-creams I could not understand them. I felt such shame that I wasn't able to communicate and give a good level of customer service. I recently saw this termed as being "signing impaired" and I absolutely love this. Why shouldn't we all be able to sign, considering it is an official language of the Union? I decided that this was something I wanted to learn, but as life has a habit of getting in the way, never started.
When I lost my hearing, the urgency to learn BSL once again hit me; what if I completely lost my hearing? How would I be able to communicate with people? Being overwhelmed at the time with adjusting to both the hearing loss and tinnitus, this quickly went on the backburner, again.
At the beginning of the pandemic, social media was full of people learning new skills, taking up new hobbies and so on. I saw a BSL course advertised that allowed you to pay whatever you could afford and signed myself up. A year later and I still haven't learned BSL for two reasons: 1) I'm not very good at learning online. I need a classroom environment, people I can practice with and regular feedback to see if I'm doing it right; and 2) learning an additional skill when you are still fortunate enough to be working full-time (all be it from home) is not the same as having to fill furlough time. I'm just as, if not more so, exhausted from the endless Zoom calls and collapse in a brain-fuddled pile at the end of the working day.
Ultimately, what I've come to realise is that I wish this had been taught in school. Fair enough, the recognition of BSL as an official language came about after I left school, but why isn't it being taught today? Could you imagine English not being taught in school? In Wales, were both Welsh and English are official languages, Welsh is taught even in English speaking schools. There are petitions calling for this to be included in the school curriculum.
Beyond this, adult classes - particularly in person - can be quite expensive. As someone who has acquired hearing loss, I believe these should be fully funded to promote a more inclusive society. Hearing loss has been noted as a effect of Covid-19, sometimes permanent, so there may be an increase of people needing to communicate by BSL in the years to come. Wouldn't it be great if society was ready for this?
